Evaluation of Syndromic Surveillance for Opioid Overdose Reporting in Illinois

Accuracy in identifying drug-related emergency department admissions is critical to understanding local burden of disease and assessing effectiveness of drug abuse prevention and overdose-reduction initiatives. In 2018 the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) began implementation of a mandatory opioid overdose reporting law, applicable to all hospital emergency departments (ED). The mandate requires reporting of patient demographics, causal substance and antagonist ED administration within 48 hours of presentation. This reporting is not name-based.

Monitoring Out-of-State Patients during a 2017 Hurricane Response using ESSENCE

Syndromic surveillance is the monitoring of symptom combinations (i.e., syndromes) or other indicators within a population to inform public health actions. The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) collects emergency department (ED) data from more than 70 hospitals across Tennessee to support statewide syndromic surveillance activities. Hospitals in Tennessee typically provide data within 48 hours of a patient encounter.

The Evolution of BioSense: Lessons Learned and Future Directions

The BioSense program was launched in 2003 with the aim of establishing a nationwide integrated public health surveillance system for early detection and assessment of potential bioterrorism-related illness. The program has matured over the years from an initial Centers for Disease Control and Prevention–centric program to one focused on building syndromic surveillance capacity at the state and local level.

Validation of a Syndromic Case Definition for Detecting Emergency Department Visits Potentially Related to Marijuana

Abstract

OBJECTIVES:

Reliable methods are needed to monitor the public health impact of changing laws and perceptions about marijuana. Structured and free-text emergency department (ED) visit data offer an opportunity to monitor the impact of these changes in near-real time. Our objectives were to (1) generate and validate a syndromic case definition for ED visits potentially related to marijuana and (2) describe a method for doing so that was less resource intensive than traditional methods.

Introducing: Future MFT Facility Administration Tool – User Interface and Functionality

The NSSP Support Team will present an overview on the plans for a future Master Facility Table user interface (UI) designed to replace the current excel-spreadsheet update process. The presentation will feature mock-ups of the UI screens, descriptions of the proposed functionality, and allow time for Q&A. The future UI is proposed to:

·         Be supported through the AMC and allow sites to view, add, and edit facility information,

·         Allow the system to automatically update server tables as appropriate based on defined business rules, and
